The Internal Revenue Service (IRS), under the U.S. Department of the Treasury, awards the Enrolled Agent credential. It is the highest recognition granted by the IRS to tax professionals authorized to represent taxpayers before the IRS.
Any graduate (B.Com, BBA, M.Com, MBA, CA, CMA) can pursue EA. There are no specific eligibility restrictions, and even students currently in college can begin preparation. EA is ideal for individuals aspiring to build careers in U.S. taxation or global accounting firms.
Candidates may attempt the EA exam parts in any order. Many start with Part 3 (Representation) as it is relatively straightforward, while those with prior tax experience may begin with Part 1 (Individuals). Mentors typically guide candidates in selecting the best sequence based on their background.
EA professionals are hired by Big 4 firms such as Deloitte, EY, PwC, and KPMG, along with BPOs, global shared service centers, and U.S. tax consulting firms like Ryan, CBIZ, Grant Thornton, and BDO.
EA-certified professionals work in U.S. taxation, accounting, and advisory roles globally. Common roles include Tax Consultant, Compliance Analyst, Tax Manager, and IRS Representative. In India, Big 4 firms, U.S.-based accounting firms, and global delivery centers actively recruit EAs for individual, corporate, and advisory tax functions.
Results are available immediately upon exam completion at the Prometric center. The official score report is emailed to the candidate within 24–48 hours.
The EA exam, officially known as the Special Enrollment Examination (SEE), consists of three parts. Each part includes 100 multiple-choice questions with a duration of 3.5 hours. Candidates may attempt the exams in any order and at any time during the year.
EAs must complete 72 hours of Continuing Education (CE) every three years, including at least 16 hours annually and 2 hours of ethics each year, to remain compliant with IRS regulations and stay current with U.S. tax laws.
